Addendum to Tim Sandberg's article about the Floyer family, contributed by John Wassell on 31st December 2009.

"I am studying the local history of Harpenden and researching the local freehold and copyhold properties of one William Bursey, a London Coachmaker who died in 1686. One of his daughters was married to Samuel Floyer, a son of Richard Floyer of Hints. I hope that the references I have found (reproduced below) are of interest.

Bursey was wealthy enough to leave £50 to each of his grandchildren. He was the first Master of the Coachmakers and Coach Harness Makers Company on its creation in 1677. The phonetic spelling "Bussey" (and other variants) were used by others but he always used Bursey. I have been able to draw up the tree below from the will and various other sources. I still cannot trace his date of birth, his wife Jane's maiden name, or her date of birth. (I believe that she died in 1668 or 1669 as she is mentioned in 1668 Manorial records but omitted in 1669)"

1687 – Floyer
The Visitation of London begun in 1687. (Harleian Society 2004)
Samuel Floyer listed as 3rd son of Richard Floyer of Hints, Staffordshire (deceased 1679, aged 77). Floyer is aged 37 and is described as Clerk of the Assize for the Oxford Circuit. Married Elizabeth daughter of John Bussey (sic) Citizen and Coachmaker of London. Issue Richard, William, Samuell and Elizabeth.

Arms- Sable a chevron ermine between 3 arrows palewise points downwards argent
Crest- On a wreath untinctured a stag’s head erased erminious attired and holding in the mouth an arrow bendwise point downward argent.
Brothers- Mathew of Hints, Justice of the Peace and High Sheriff of Staffordshire (1682, and again in 1695)
- John of Lichfield, Staffs. Doctor of Physick.
- Peter, Citizen and Goldsmith of Aldersgate Ward, London.
The visitation is signed by Peter- so the John Bussey error is presumably his.

Note the use of this coat of arms by another, unrelated, Floyer family.
