Your e-mail enquiry concerning Richard Floyer has been forwarded to me by our records officer, Steve Goldsby, since our early membership records are held in my custody in the Inner Temple archives.I have been unable to find a Richard Floyer in the admissions records of the Inner Temple, but on looking at the published admission records of the Middle Temple I discovered a Richard Flyer [sic], only son of Ralf Flyer of Hyntes, Staffordshire, esq. who was admitted to the Middle Temple on 1st July 1620 and called to the bar by the Middle Temple on 27 June 1628. I think that this must be the man you seek.It was not uncommon for mistakes to be made in distinguishing between mebership of Inner or Middle Temple.

I received your e-mail concerning Richard Floyer/Fleyer/Flyer. If the person you are researching is the same one identified by Clare Rider (you didn't send me a copy of your original letter of enquiry to her, apparently concerning a Richard Floyer), ie Richard Flyer (or Fleyer), admitted to Middle Temple on 1st July 1620 and called to the Bar here on 27 June 1628,there is some further information on him in the records.

. The information on his dates of admission and call, his father's name and place of origin appears in Registers of Admission to the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple (3 vols) by HAC Sturgess (Butterworths, 1949). There are several references to him in the Middle Temple Records: Minutes of Parliament of Middle Temple, Vol II, 1603 - 1649 edited by CH Hopwood (Butterworths, 1904). An index of persons and places was produced as Vol. IV of Middle Temple Records in 1905.

Most of the references are to fairly routine administrative and financial matters relating to chambers and bonds of surety, which may not be of interest to you. In Volumes I and II of the same records there are also references to Richard Flyer's father, Ralf Flyer, who was admitted to Middle Temple in 1583. Incidentally, a Ralph Floyer, eldest son of Charles Floyer, of Hints, Staffordshire, esq, was admitted to the Middle Temple on 21 April 1760, but was not called to the Bar.

There are two Ralf/Ralph Flyer/Fleyers who appear in different places in the admissions registers. Richard's father, to whom I referred was admitted in 1583 - son and heir of Richard Fleyer of Uttexater [sic], Staffs. He was called to the Bar here in 1592. The other Ralph Flyer was admitted in 1693. He was son and heir of Matthew Flyer of Hints, Staffs. The family obviously had Middle Temple links over many generations.
